The time is right to go freelance!
By Nick Jones
After graduating from university back in 1999 I spent many years drifting from job to job and I never managed to shake the feeling that working for other people just wasn't for me. Was I just in the wrong job? I would say that for the first few years, definitely yes. I'd graduated in English and never fancied being an English teacher or journalist, so I just fell into a sales career which was definitely not for me. Luckily, however, I managed to step sideways into proofreading which I certainly do enjoy doing, but still this was in-house proofreading for a major advertising company, and so I still reported to a boss every day. I still had targets and I was tied to holiday request forms, appraisals and the usual red tape. Before long those niggling doubts returned: did I really want to work for this same company forever? Did I want to report to a boss for the rest of my life? I would look around at my colleagues and I got the impression that most of them were happy with that prospect. For me, however, the voice of doubt just got louder and louder. Today I am a freelance proofreader. I run the business via my website, and things are going very well. I taught myself some basic web design skills which allow me to maintain my own site (I would say that this is crucial) and I have spent a lot of time and money building up the site's profile. It hasn't been easy, and it certainly wasn't an overnight success, but a bit of hard work is all it took in my case. Hard work and a whole lot of adaptability. It's not for everyone, of course, and I am aware that what I see as exciting and challenging, some would see as risky and uncertain. But to those people, I would point out this: that voice in my head that got louder and louder wasn't actually the straw that broke the camel's back. I was eventually made redundant, and not for the first time in my life either. It is true that for most people a job is no longer for life, and so perhaps it's time for you to think outside the box. While the job market becomes more volatile, the Internet continues to open up exciting opportunities for those individuals who are looking for them. It's part of our cultural evolution, and if you happen to have a skill or interest that you can monetise via the web - and you're willing to put the hours in - perhaps you should seriously consider going for it too! |

I love the website. My wife had a professional freelance typing service some years ago. Her experience as a legal secretary came in really handy. She could type at 120 words a minute. She took hand written Essays, Dissertations, Theses and turned them into well formatted typewritten masterpieces for college students. She made up flyers with pull of tabs that were half a sheet of typing paper. That size made it easier to fit in the space available. I would go and post them on all the billboards at local colleges. That worked pretty well and was inexpensive promotion. She now is a freelance author and on a good day can type 6000 words of new copy for the next ebook.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you like the site! 120 words a minute? Wow!!! I'd like to write an ebook but it's finding the time - if I could type 6,000 words a day maybe it would be more achievable!
Kudos Nick! Good advice.
In 1999, my first grandchild arrived on the planet; my spouse retired from the food warehouse industry; my 10-year employment pin was two years old; my BS in Business Operations-DeVry had been on my bookshelf for five years and I was facing how-to maintain the household budget deleting spouse's annual income that was 70% more than his fixed retired income. Fortunately, months before he retired, we bacame Tahition Noni associate distributors. Excellent business opportunity, we earned well.
