The importance of an effective email signature
By Nick Jones
Don't let your emails fizzle out If you're a freelancer, an online business owner, a blogger or indeed anybody else with something to promote on the internet, you need to be constantly striving to make your website stand out. One surefire way to do this is to design an effective email signature which is automatically attached to any email you send. Whether you use a webmail client like Yahoo!, Hotmail or Gmail, or whether you use a desktop email client like Outlook Express or Lotus Notes, it is very easy to devise a signature. You just have to go into General Settings or Options and you'll find a section called Signatures. Click on it, type your preferred signature and click 'ok'. In future you should find that whenever you go to start an email, the signature will already be there. Why use a signature? The general benefits of having a signature are so obvious I barely even need to point them out. It saves you typing them out each time, it brings consistency to your emails, it looks professional - the list goes on. But there is one specific advantage of a signature which is perhaps a little less obvious, and it is perhaps the most important of all. A lot of people wouldn't think of it, because they think that a signature is just a person's name followed by their contact details. Perhaps there was a time when it was that simple, but in the age of social networking, I think you need to try harder. You've been given new tools to work with that allow you to stand out from the crowd - use them! Most email signatures consist of an address, phone number, email and web address, but why not streamline these details and replace them with more dynamic information? Certainly the email address isn't required (for obvious reasons) and most web addresses can be deduced from the email address anyway. Personally, I think the most effective signature you could have would consist of your name, your business name, possibly a slogan describing your business, and then links to your Twitter page, Facebook page and blog (if you have these things - and if you run a website in 2010, you should). By linking to these webpages with every single email you send, you are increasing your changes of getting hits, you are demonstrating that you are serious, proactive and 'with the program', you are increasing your chances of getting followers, and ultimately you are selling your products/services without even trying. Gain followers on Twitter, Facebook or your blog, and these people will be 'hooked' - they will receive updates from you as regularly as you care to provide them! Signing Off Of course there is an element of personal preference when it comes to email signatures, and what I have stated above is only my opinion. But if you aren't using a signature in your emails at all at the moment, do yourself a favour and spend five minutes creating one now. It's all about communication! |

I highly agree with email signatures. Many users of emails also participate in social communities; which is a better place for constant contact. Attaching one's social community to his/her email signature, will eventually become the norm. I give away free email accounts that are excellent for Open Networking and a great to include a clickable link in one's email signature
Thank you for sharing this intel on email signatures, Nick. I don't have an email program going with my website, so I guess that I better find out how to do it. Keep up the good work. Best to you. Frederick
Absolutely correct - a well-written email signature can earn a lot of hits to your website.
thanks for the ideas. I actually had no idea how to get a signature set up and was wondering and now I am going to set it up!
